Yes. Under Ohio law effective September 30, 2025, all first-time drivers under the age of 21 must complete an Ohio-approved driver education course before obtaining a license.
For first-time drivers under 21:
24 hours of classroom instruction (in person or online).
8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor.
50 hours of supervised driving practice with a licensed adult (age 21+), 10 of which must be at night.
All of this must be completed before scheduling your road test.
If you are 21 or older and getting your first Ohio license, you are not subject to the under-21 driver education requirement; however, abbreviated adult training may be needed if you fail the road test.
All first-time drivers under 21 must log:
50 hours of supervised driving,
With at least 10 nighttime hours,
Supervised by a licensed adult age 21 or older.
Your supervising driver must complete and sign the 50-Hour Affidavit (BMV Form 5791) before your road test.
You can schedule the road test once all of the following are complete:
You have held your TIPIC for at least 6 months (if under 18).
You have completed your required driver education training.
You have logged your 50 supervised driving hours.
Bring to your road test:
Your valid TIPIC (learner’s permit).

If you are under 18, you must follow probationary license restrictions (e.g., night time and passenger limitations) until you reach full driving privileges.

prefer a more hands on approach.
If you’re under 21 and fail the road test you will be able to retake
it as many times as you like.
If you’re over 21 and fail the road test, you will be required to take the adult abbreviated drivers education course.
